If you are new to backups, reading this will help you in developing a solid strategy that you can tailor to fit your needs. The three main reasons for tape backup are: to protect against data loss, to archive data and to increase system performance. Backups protect against data loss due to a disk crash, fire, theft, software or hardware failure, accidental deletions and power spikes. Tape backups save time and money. If a data loss occurs, simply restore your data, eliminating the need to spend days re-keying and reconstructing your data. Archiving data makes it easy to store seldom used files on tape, conserving valuable disk space. It provides an effective method for long-term storage of data. You can also archive information on tapes for easy portability. Three Backup Methods Total Total backup saves all files and directories on the drive you specify. This option oggets the versadltty of te~oring ~ped~~ fl~s individually while also giving you a complete copy of your disk. Selective With Selective, choose specific files and directories to backup. Selection is possible at any level: directories, subdirectories or individual files. With this option it is simple to transfer data to other sires or archive selected files for storage.
Modified Files Only Modified backups automatically include only the files that have been -stem changed since your last backup. With Modified backups you save nce time by backing up only the files that have changed. Combine Total and Modified backups with a Tape Rotation strategy (see pag~ ,e time 24) to obtain the best tape backup protection. Thpe Volume Names Each backup of a drive you make constitutes one rape volume. Therefore, if you have three disk drives C:, D:, and E:, each would reside on your tape as a unique volume afrer a Total Backup. This enables you to keep track of your backups in case you need to restore. You can choose to save previous backups, add new backups or overwrite previous backups. If you choose to overwrite a previous backup it can not be retrieved. |
